NOTES: From the Orange and Baileys Prize-shortlisted author comes an urgent, explosive story of love and a family torn apart Isma is free. After years spent raising her twin siblings in the wake of their mother's death, she is finally studying in America, resuming a dream long deferred. But she can't stop worrying about Aneeka, her beautiful, headstrong sister back in London - or their brother, Parvaiz, who's disappeared in pursuit of his own dream: to prove himself to the dark legacy of the jihadist father he never knew. Then Eamonn enters the sisters' lives. Handsome and privileged, he inhabits a London worlds away from theirs. As the son of a powerful British Muslim politician, Eamonn has his own birthright to live up to - or defy. Is he to be a chance at love? The means of Parvaiz's salvation? Two families' fates are inextricably, devastatingly entwined in this searing novel that asks: what sacrifices will we make in the name of love? A contemporary reimagining of Sophocles' Antigone, Home Fire is an urgent, fiercely compelling story of loyalties torn apart when love and politics collide - confirming Kamila Shamsie as a master storyteller of our times.

NOTES: For years Jaxie Clackton has dreaded going home. His beloved mum is dead, and he wishes his dad was too, until one terrible moment leaves his life stripped to nothing. No one ever told Jaxie Clackton to be careful what he wishes for. And so Jaxie runs. There's just one person in the world who understands him, but to reach her he'll have to cross the vast saltlands of Western Australia. It is a place that harbours criminals and threatens to kill those who haven't reckoned with its hot, waterless vastness. This is a journey only a dreamer - or a fugitive - would attempt. Fierce and lyrical, The Shepherd's Hut by Tim Winton is a story of survival, solitude and unlikely friendship. Most of all it is about what it takes to keep hope alive in a parched and brutal world.

Avenue Book Club

We love to discuss books. While we’re happy to do it every day in our stores (just ask us!), we love to spend a dedicated hour or two diving into tomorrow’s bestsellers, lost classics, our favourite new novels, award-winners and works that challenge and charm us. Join us!

Each month, we choose a novel, classic, biography, history or work of nonfiction to discuss, with Avenue booksellers leading rousing discussions over several nights at both of our stores. Sharing our ideas brings a greater enjoyment and understanding to our reading, and it offers us the chance to experience books we wouldn’t have otherwise found. (Please note: book club takes a summer break in December and January, so we can tackle a longer book for discussion each February.)

We have openings for new members at Albert Park and Elsternwick.

  • There’s no membership fee.
  • Use your Avenue Bookstore Card (or sign up for one!) to earn double points on each book club pick. As always, Avenue Bookstore Card members earn points on every purchase, which leads to a 10% rebate.
  • We provide wine and nibbles at each book club meeting.
  • Avenue booksellers facilitate respectful, welcoming discussions.
  • We email book club members each month with the following month’s meeting dates. We ask that members RSVP so we can monitor numbers and close off dates as needed.
  • Book club meetings are strictly for members only. RSVP is essential. If you’d like to join the book club, please contact us.
